A long-distance sailor had just gotten married when he was ordered to set sail on a long voyage. Afraid that his wife might be unfaithful while he was away, he asked his neighbor to keep an eye on her. He told him that every time his wife brought a man home to spend the night, he should hammer a nail into the front door.
One year later, the sailor returned home and saw that there were only three nails hammered into the door. He let out a sigh of relief:
“Thank God! That means my wife only betrayed me three times during that long year…”
Just then, the neighbor walked by. Hearing what the sailor said, he shrugged and replied:
“I don’t remember how many nails I hammered in, but your wife replaced the door twice.”
